Wyoming Longears Ranch Basset and
All Breeds Rescue

We are a group that cares about the Basset Hound, as well as many other breeds and are dedicated to finding new, permanent, loving homes for them.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING information before deciding if a rescue dog is right for you!  Then follow the links on the side to see our available dogs and find out more information on our adoption process.

  • Our dogs are placed in approved homes only with fenced yards.
  • Home visits and complete references are necessary for home approval.
  • We only place our dogs within our area, we don't do any long distance/cross country placements.
  • All of our dogs are spayed/neutered prior to placement and we do not place our dogs in homes with any unspayed/neutered dogs.  Other animals must be current on their vaccinations.

Basset Facts

Bassets have easygoing temperaments, but they are strong-willed and intelligent and they use these traits to their advantage.  They are willing dogs, as long as what you wish of them is what they intended to do in the first place.  You must have patience and perseverance to train a basset.  If you’re a person who wants a “soldier”, PLEASE,.. choose another breed!

Basset Hounds love to be loved, and need to be part of a family.  If a basset is to be left alone during the day, prospective owners should consider another dog or cat to keep him/her company.  Bassets do not need a huge yard or a high fence, but their wonderful noses lead them far astray when they are not confined to home or a fenced yard.  FOR THIS REASON THIS RESCUE DOES NOT CONSIDER APPLICATIONS FROM HOMES WITHOUT SECURE FENCES.

BASSETS ARE NOT SMALL DOGS.  Their weight generally ranges between 35 to 50 lbs., but there are "large" Bassets weighing in at 65-70 lbs.   The breed is prone to obesity, particularly after age four or five so bassets must be fed only a high quality food.

THE BASSET DOES NOT NEED FUSSY COAT CARE, but because they tend to shed year-round they should be brushed at least weekly.  The inside of the ears needs to be cleaned often because heavy ear leather prevents loss of moisture from inside the ear.  The outside of the ear will collect more dirt than other dogs' because the ears fall into the water and feed bowls and then drag along the ground.  Nails are tough.  They should be trimmed every two weeks.  AND DON'T FORGET THE YEARLY INOCULATIONS!!  Have your vet do a fecal check twice a year, and talk to your vet about heartworm in your area.
